NEW TEACHER UNDERGROUND WEST
New Teacher Underground West is a social space for newer and recently certified teachers of color in their early years of teaching (1-3 years) to find support from experienced educators to build an analysis and be a part of a collective that focuses on social justice education in San Francisco. Through political education and sharing our stories, we strive to be empowered both in and out of the classroom. In each session we will build community, give and take advice, problem solve, do some political education, and have fun.New Teacher Underground West will meet the first Thursday of every month from 5:00pm-7:00pm in San Francisco. First gathering is 5pm, Thursday Sept. 5th, 2019.
This group is open to teachers in their first to third year of teaching who identify as people of color. Please commit to coming to all the sessions. Space is limited.
RSVP by 5pm, Sunday, Sept. 1st, 2019 so we can have the appropriate amount of food and materials. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Book Club – (SF)2019-2020
Teachers in this group will use literature and the discussions of this literature as a basis for rethinking their actions in the classroom. Teachers will alternate reading Young Adult fiction and scholarly non-fiction. We will gather to hold a structured discussion using a protocol that allows every voice to be heard and every topic or question a participant brings to be examined. As an educator book club, we’ll make what could be difficult to do solo engaging, collaborative, reflective and fun. Space is limited, people of color encouraged to apply.
H.E.L.L.A. People’s On the Run is a grassroots organization collaboration between the Teachers 4 Social Justice and the People’s Education Movement to create opportunities for educators/organizers of color to heal collectively, network and build together. The acronym H.E.L.L.A. stands for Healing, Empowerment, Love, Liberation and Action, which are the guiding tenets of the H.E.L.L.A. Critical Affinity Group within T4SJ and People’s stands for the Bay Area chapter of the People’s Education Movement. Considering the structural barriers designed to keep people of color alienated, isolated and collectively disempowered within the realm of teaching and organizing [i.e. 83% of the teaching profession is White; Gentrification and the displacement of POC throughout the Bay Area, etc.] our hope is to build on our existing efforts of centering the needs, healing, strengths and individual/collective power of POC in our organizing spaces.
Every 2nd Saturday beginning in November 2018 and ending in May 2019 participants who sign up will meet at the white pillars at Lake Merritt. At 9 am we will begin with stretching, affirmations and Assata Shakur’s chant. At 9:15 am folks will choose one of the following groups to join:
A) Mindful Meditation/Yoga Squad *please bring a yoga mat
B) Walking Squad
C) Jogging Squad
D) Roll Squad
E) Running Squad
Please come wearing all black attire, bring water and revolutionary loving/healing energy to exchange with other educators and organizers of color! #HELLAPeoplesOnTheRun
